So I’m just plain excited about this next month. Lindsay’s favorite place to go in the world has always been Beijing. Beijing was my favorite place until I went to Kruger in South Africa. So the fact that we’ll both be going to China in a couple weeks for about three weeks and then I’ll come home for a couple weeks and then head out to South Africa? Man, I am getting pumped.
All I could think about today was being back in Kruger. But then it reminded me of all the awesome things here in Escondido (north San Diego county, for those not familiar with SoCal geography). My workstation is right in front of two windows. This is very purposeful. We have several different types of bird — one of which being woodpecker (one of my favorites) and the other being a pair of red tail hawks that have a nest in a huge eucalyptus tree next to our house. I’ve been here in Escondido my whole life — and seeing the local animals here like the red tail hawks and woodpeckers never ages. I genuinely get so much joy added to my day in seeing them.
After seeing the hawk for a while, and continually thinking about being on safari again, I wanted to shoot some photos of the birds around here. We’ve got some pretty rad ones. I’m not a bird watcher at all — but I’m a person who one day wants to be a bird watcher, if that makes sense. Anyways, I went outside for about 15 minutes — just in my backyard — and shot whatever birds I could find. Here are a few favorites of a hummingbird, something I don’t know, and a red tail hawk…

I’ve never wanted a Canon 400mm f/2.8L so badly. I hope I don’t want to take up animal photography more seriously as that lens will put me back somewhere around $5k.
Those who believe that the good life is somewhere else will likely never find it. Traveling is awesome if you have the opportunity — but the truth is that the good life is all around us. If you can’t find it at home, you likely won’t find it anywhere ;)
