Speaking. Sheesh. I mean, I’m not a shy guy and I talk way too much as is. But something about getting on a stage and talking — when people can’t talk back — that makes me not all that excited. Because of this, I’ve turned down a few workshops and speaking arrangements around the world in the last year or two.
Anyways, I got a phone call from one of my favorite people — Josh. Josh and Sara were putting on a workshop around the country — and they wanted me to be the guest speaker at the Santa Barbara stop. About a week before, I turned down a speaking arrangement with PPA at next year’s Imaging conference and Josh was furious with me (he’s always pushing me to speak and do workshops). He even said that if I’d change my mind he would come up with topics that he would love to hear me speak on — almost like cliff notes for things I can ramble on and on about. So after some begging (just kidding ;), I told Josh I’d do it because we’re such good friends and because I was going to make him basically tell me exactly what he wanted me to talk about — like he said he would for the PPA dealio :P
It ended up being awesome. I rambled on about nonsense like how I started, my ideas on what it takes to be a working photographer, where to get inspiration, little things that have worked for me over the years, etc. — and everyone was kind enough to make me feel like I actually said something that mattered :) It had a conversational aspect to it — and that made it more enjoyable for me. I walked away from it feeling psyched!

I talk with my hands way too much. My mom would tell you that I am my mother’s son for this reason :)

God bless people who laugh at my jokes!

The crew :)
Thanks to all the new people I met for letting me share with you! And Josh and Sara, thanks for pushing me to speak — I enjoyed it much more than I expected!

Whenever I’m featured somewhere it’s always surprising for me — and as often as it surprises me, it really feels great too :) Well I Heart Faces is awesome and I was pleasantly surprised when I received an email from them recently asking if I would be a guest judge. In typical Bobby Earle fashion, I took way too long getting back to them, getting images to them, getting their interview questions answered, and so on… but Amy and Angie were such dolls throughout the whole process.
I’m lucky enough to engage in some legitimate photojournalism from time to time, but I don’t bring in any real income with pure photojournalism. If I could pay the bills the way I do now — and not be gone 24/7 like most working PJ pros — I’d strongly consider it. But it doesn’t (pay enough) and I would (be gone too often without my family) so I’m not (a working photojournalist). Even still, I Heart Faces apparently thinks there is enough PJ in my imagery to qualify me for this week’s guest judge — with the topic being “photojournalism” — and that makes me so happy. I’ve always believed that PJ is a real and serious part of my imagery — not just a buzzword. It’s nice when other people think so too :)

Update: I’m TRYING my best to answer everyone’s questions for me in the comment section of the interview. If your question doesn’t require a conversation, I’ll probably be able to answer it!

A few weeks ago, Jessica Claire emailed me asking if I’d be up for an interview for the Shootsac newsletter. Being a total lover of my Shootsac, I gladly obliged :)

Here’s an excerpt from the interview…
Q: Tell us the truth–how do you find the time and money to go as many places as you do? Is this something that would be realistic for anyone? Are there sacrifices you make in other parts of your life to make this lifestyle possible?
Before my job allowed for me to travel while getting paid, we just roughed it. I think at one point we went two years without seeing a movie in the theaters. We never ate out. We only bought food at the grocery store that was significantly on sale. We bought a car from impound for like 400 bucks (after a couple other clunkers). We basically never spent any money so that we could go at least one or two new countries every year. I began making money as a photographer a few years ago and I started getting paid to travel so it just went from there. I no longer had to spend my money to go to awesome places in the world.
Is our lifestyle realistic for anyone? Depends, I suppose. I’m a firm believer in the fact that while we may dream about far off ideas, we end up doing what we really, really want to. Sort of like if you want to be a doctor, I mean really want to become a doctor, you don’t just daydream about being a doctor one day. You get off the couch and you go to med school, you know? I think the way I live is realistic for anyone who truly wants to see the world — and is willing to do what it takes to make that happen.
Look at just about every young and broke Australian or Kiwi. They aren’t super rich, but I swear I run into more Aussies and Kiwis who are traveling the globe for a year than anyone. Everyone might not be able to become a photographer and get paid to travel, but I think a new country every year is completely realistic for just about anyone. But again, if you live in an awesome country like America (or many other awesome western countries), and have tons of opportunities, if you aren’t doing what you want there’s a good chance you don’t want it bad enough. So if you want to see the world, make it happen!

Feel free to read the rest of it here, if you like. Be warned — I’m a bit of a talker ;) Thanks to the Shootsac peeps for letting me ramble on and on and on and on :)

I saw this really sweet post on my twitter account yesterday…
So I followed the link to see that the interview I did a couple months back with Get Totally Rad! (makers of the best actions on earth) had been made from an hour long phone interview into a sort of article/cliff notes thing. Thanks to the ever-ripping Kristen, of course, for doing that! It still has a link to the audio interview, but this just looks much cooler than I sound :P

Feel free to see the rest of the interview here
Kristen (market master at Get Totally Rad! and the interviewer) also happens to be a RIPPING photographer — so go check her blog out!

As a side note, I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t believe that Kanye went after me! Someone’s got to stop this guy!!!

And since blogs without pictures aren’t totally rad…

Trouble at about 12 pounds in his XL dogloo. When he’s 100+ pounds, he’ll fill this thing out quite nicely. For now, he just looks way too adorable and small…
And he was snoring when I shot this ;)
