The Lodge at Torey Pines: Amy and Ian

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

I’ve been dying to post this wedding! I can’t go on enough about how much Emily Smiley killed it with the coordinating for this event. Also, huge shout out to Dylan for second shooting with me again :)

I want to go on and on about how awesome all the vendors were, how fun Amy and Ian were (how Ian had Amy show me a photo of a famous movie killer, Jason, to make sure I was a good fit :P)… but I have a TON of images to post and figure we should just get straight to them!

Ian’s reaction to seeing Amy’s gift — a boudoir album :)

The guys hanging out.

Emily Smiley and LaVonne from Adorations did an INSANE job with the planning and detailing of this wedding. I felt like a 5 year old compared to the insane work they were doing!!!

Can you tell that Platinum Pro nailed Amy and Ian’s custom floor by their reaction here?! :)

More amazing details!

I LOVED their cake!!!

They had a walk in welcome ovation like they were celebrities :)

The first dance led into a really fun group dance with the entire bridal party. Naturally, Amy air guitar’ed the living daylights out of Ian’s leg :)

I can’t even begin to explain how funny the best man’s speech was. Obviously, in my line of work, I hear a lot of these. I can’t count how many times I was just laughing out like a guest. It was one of those speeches that wasn’t just funny to those who knew him — it was just plain funny. Hence the following image…

The following images have a funny story. Amy apparently is completely unaware of her strength. So this bouquet toss went a bit different…

… So Amy threw the bouquet clear over all the single ladies. Apparently, it landed RIGHT in this girl’s lap — who, you guessed it, is single! Can someone say fate? :P

Huge shout out to DJ Justin Kanoya. An awesome, fun, NOT cheesy DJ can be a hard find. Justin is absolutely awesome!

———-

The next day, we did a day after session with Amy and Ian. Can I just say how much I LOVE day after sessions? You have way more time to relax and be with your guests on your wedding day and you end up with tons of stress free time for shooting wherever you want the next day (and during the best light). The following images wouldn’t have been possible without the day after sesh :)

While shooting, Dylan noticed something amazing. A bobcat just above us!!! This animal was gorgeous and if you have ever followed my African safari posts, you know how much I love seeing animals in the wild. It was a week after coming back from a safari and made me so grateful! I’ve always wanted to see a wild cat like this in my hometown!

Wow! That was a LOT of images! Hope you enjoyed them :)

Shauna - This wedding was truly gorgeous and beautifully photographed! From the details of the ceremony with all 4 corners & elements being represented and them in the center representing the spirit, the ribbon tied into a magical pentacle, the decor, the adorable cake, the after session pictures with that tree - oh that tree is amazing! And, the bobcat - almost like someone's familiar was out there with them. Truly personalized and beautiful without being even an ounce cheesy - great job to all the vendors on this gorgeous wedding. Would love to write a blog post on it if I could get all the vendor names & contact info. -Shauna: YourLifEvents.com|Weddings, Nesting, Coupling & Kids | Lifestyle & Wedding Blog for the Artsy ChicJuly 23, 2010 - 9:23 am

Africa 2010: Days 4, 5, and 6

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

So I totally forgot when I posted about days 1, 2, and 3 about probably my favorite sighting! It was day 3 (our second day in the park — but our first full day). We were told very specific directions outside of the Lower Sabie lodge to a leopard about 15 kilometers away. Supposedly he had been sitting in a tree for hours. Off we went. As the case goes with most leopard, this one was gone. The road where he was earlier had a few cars still trying to find him. No leopard. But there was something else. As we’re driving forward on a dirt road, we notice a car a few hundred meters up from us reversing. That’s always a good sign. We look out and see the one big cat that I didn’t see last time I went to Kruger. Cheetah.

Cheetah lower sabie

I was absolutely thrilled! The cheetah was a ways out but was walking towards us! The cat ended up stopping right in front of our car (and at one point darted left and right for a rabbit — only to go back to this same spot). We just stared as long as it sat there. We were lucky as the sighting lasted a good five minutes. Absolutely beautiful animal.

So day 4 had us back at my favorite place on earth. The Olifants lodge. Olifants has a lookout from camp that looks like it is where life began. You can see elephant crossing, hippo laying, giraffe feeding… all while you eat your meal on the top of the little Olifants mountain. It’s truly the most serene place in the world.

Olifants lookout
Looking out from the lodge at a herd crossing the Olifants river.

baboon olifants bridge
We crossed the bridge on our way out in the morning — there’s almost always baboon nearby :)

ground hornbill olifants
The ground hornbill. I absolutely love these inquisitive little (or really big, I should say) guys. My hunch is that people feed them more than they ought to, given that they walk right up to your car door and look at you like you owe them something :) They are giant birds that look like they’d love to sit with you all day. They’re awesome.

zebra satara
We headed down to the Satara lodge — in hopes of seeing some lion — and passed tons of zebra along the way. How can you not love these guys!

elephant olifants
A lone bull extremely close (and comfortable, I might add) to my open window. I’m used to Asian elephant with all the time I’ve spent over in Asia over the years. When I first saw African elephant it was almost like another species. They look like dinosaurs — they’re that massive. Elephant in general might be my favorite animal encounter in the bush.

giraffe satara
Giraffe are everywhere out there! Such a sweet animal.

warthog olifants
We saw ten times the warthog I saw last time. I love these ugly little guys. It’s like he’s staring right at me saying “whatcha gonna do, huh???

The best part about Olifants is that you can be out on the bridge close to sunset and still make it in the gate. All of Kruger has the rule that you have to stay in your car. There’s a couple of spots in the 7500 square miles that you are allowed to get out — this bridge is one of them (it’s pretty long so it’s totally safe to get out on). Sunsets over the river from this place are my favorite in the world.

sunset olifants bridgesunset olifants riversunset olifants bridgesunset olifants river

One of the prettiest birds in the world. The Lilac Breasted Roller. He got himself a nice little grasshopper :)

The best part about the Satara lodge? The resident Scops owl!!! This guy is actually smaller than my hand — no joke. I saw him last year and Garrett had really wanted to see him from seeing my pictures. I was so glad that he was there again! Garrett and I could have stared at him for hours. He sleeps right where everyone walks and doesn’t mind you getting a few feet away for a good picture. That’s a Kruger ambassador right there!

zebra leaning kruger
One of the sweetest things in the bush — zebra leaning on each other. You see it a ton but it’s hard to move past :)

brown snake eagle olifants
Another thing we saw much more of on this trip was bird of prey. These are something I can’t get enough of. Here at home we have a couple red-tail hawks that live on our block. I’ve seen them my whole life but I’ll still stare at them for as long as they’re around. Needless to say, seeing huge eagles out in Africa was just amazing. We probably saw three or four eagles a day!

baby crocodile balule
We were driving around Balule (I believe) and this little guy was getting some morning sun. On the opposite side of our car was a beautiful monitor doing the exact same thing. Being a reptile freak from early childhood, this was a real treat. This baby was about a meter long :)

baby elephant olifantsbaby elephants olifants
On our way home for the night we passed yet another large herd of ellies. Probably 20 of them on both sides of us. These two little guys were playing together — pushing each other and taking from from the others mouth. It was adorable :)

Day six we saw a ton more — but I told myself that I would take my camera out only on rare occasions for this trip. I wanted to experience the animals as much as possible and shooting less helped me do that even more this time. We had two lion sightings during this time, as well! But I really wanted to take it in so no photos. Sorry!

Vervet monkeys on my car olifants kruger
These guys jumped on our car right when we pulled up! I’m pretty sure they’re used to people feeding them and expected we’d do the same ;)

vulture olifants
Vultures are one of the most fascinating animals in the bush. I believe they have the most advanced immune system out of any animal in the world — with the ability to take on things like anthrax! They look kind of ugly, I suppose, but that just makes them more lovable to me ;)

baby giraffe olifants
Baby giraffe are way too cute!

baby elephant playing olifants
This is actually a screen grab from my 5D Mark II video file. This little baby was sitting on top of and pushing its older sibling. Talk about watching something awesome!

I hope this is making you want to go on safari at the Kruger park! I already want to go back. I’ll see if I can finish up the trip later this week. Thanks for checking these out!

Pregnancy: She feels fat

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

The other night, just before she went to bed, Lindsay hugged me and started crying. Apart from having a baby bump, and the occasional cry on this topic, you’d never know she was pregnant (I have it pretty easy!). Well she told me that she felt “really fat today“. Now since Lindsay is a woman, to say that she has body issues is almost redundant. I’m sure that the media plays a role, but I really think this is a pretty natural feeling. Jealousy is something we all deal with and that’s probably the root of a lot of this (and don’t think I’m implying us men don’t have our jealousies — because we certainly do).

I’ve always thought the key to dealing with body issues is changing what you reasonably can and accepting the rest with style. Lindsay has always enjoyed the gym and loves running (I’ll never understand the latter one). She eats so well (she turns down desserts and waffle fries from Chick-fil-a for a side salad like nothing). Yet she still wishes this body part did that better or that body part went in this direction, and so on, and so on…

Just before she laid down, she added “I just feel like I’m expanding…” I simply added “you are!” That sounds mean, but I meant it. I explained that she is — but not because she’s lazy or not looking after herself… but because she’s pregnant! She’s so good with her plan with our doctor about her health — being exactly where the doctor has mapped out for her to be at this point. So however she ends up thinking she looks? Well it’s just all natural baby making looks :) I mean, if she were sitting on the couch all day and having chocolate sundaes for lunch, I could make a suggestion of changing up her health habits, or something, you know? But she’s doing everything right!

So today I thought it might help if I stated publicly that Lindsay is just plain gorgeous. I’m talking knockout status. People are always commenting here about how stunning she is, and I most certainly agree. In fact, the only thing I’d add is that watching her body change while it’s cooking up the boy has made her even more beautiful to me.

Lindsay Earle
Pregnant and killing it in Beijing, China.

It’s so funny because pregnancy has Lindsay feeling sexier than Angelina Jolie or Megan Fox at times (like I said before, she stares at her new cleavage more than I do!) and straight fat and ugly at other times. I’m actually fascinated by the hormones — almost wishing I could be injected with them so I could have an idea where she’s coming from :)

But like I said a moment go, Lindsay, I think you’re more beautiful than ever. And you know that I’m not the patronizing type — so when you feel like this again, just remember that despite what your hormones are telling you, pregnancy has made you even hotter. Oh… and you are by far the easiest/best/funnest pregnant woman to live with ever (which then makes you even hotter). Thanks for cooking up my baby ;)

Aaron Hoops - tell her to swim instead of running....its a good workout and apparently....and i have no idea how they know this....but the sound of the water is comforting to the baby or something.May 25, 2010 - 12:00 am

Jessica Wright- Monnich - I remember those days, That is soooo awesome that she is keeping to the plan your DR. set up. Encourage her to keep it up! I put on 70 lbs and still haven't gotten it off, well found out I had a thyroid prob. which we are trying to stabalize as well as an IUC which aids in weight gain. luckily just keeping it level but not loosing. Anyhoo continue to tell her she looks amazing that alllllllwwwwwayyyys helps :) Then you will get the joy of something else on her body getting big as her milk comes in ;). BUT warning when she actually has the baby they will be HUGE but they will HURT like HECK so NO touchy touchy :)May 25, 2010 - 12:00 am

Karen Doll - I hope she realizes she is not getting FAT she is being PREGNANT. She is an amazing lady and I was surprised to hear that even someone as beautiful, thin, and together as Lyndsey suffers from body image issues from time to time. She is absolutely stunning ... if i had a quarter of her beauty i would feel blessed. : )May 25, 2010 - 12:00 am

Cindy Lowe - Did her pain go away? I sure hope so! :) Have been praying for her!May 25, 2010 - 12:57 am

Daniël Cronk - hands down funniest phrase: "... while it's cooking up the boy." LMAO... and on a side note, i know where Lindsay is coming from (minus the pregnancy), society is what causes many of those issues.May 25, 2010 - 4:27 am

Julie Mays Frye - Lindsay, Because you are so fit you will lose the baby weight and probably quickly. With my first I lost more than I gained BEFORE I left the hospital. Well, 3 babies more is a different story. But my goodness! You are gorgeous! Show that bump off (and the cleavage). And you have a very sweet husband. May 25, 2010 - 4:28 am

Amber Griffith Gould - It's all worth it in the end! May 25, 2010 - 5:08 am

Andrea Simcheck - Wow Bobby you are so sweet! Lindsay you are the cutest pregnant woman ever! You look so good! I hope I can look that good when I have kiddies :)May 25, 2010 - 5:49 am

Laurel DePriest Pankratz - I wish body issues weren't a part of pregnancy, but if you're used to being small and fit, it just sucks to be out of control of your body. But the best thing I did while pregnant was to work out a lot. Not because it made me look any different, but because it made me feel better. In turn, it made my delivery and recovery SO much easier. May 25, 2010 - 6:40 am

Ginger Murray - You look here, Lindsey-- you are honestly gorgeous and still so thin. You will never be a larger person other than when your tummy gets bigger with another person inside. I hope when I'm preggo one day, I can look like you;)May 25, 2010 - 12:15 am

Nick Radford - You both are awesome. :)May 25, 2010 - 12:17 am

Gilda Adler - ok, first of all, the word fat should disappear from any conversations! The word of the day is RIPE! this is coming from a girl who put on 45 pounds with each child!!!!second of all, pregnancy is a time where we just enjoy every second and yes, everything that is on the plate! it is not a time when we count calories! I enjoyed my triple chocolate lava cake first time and the peanut butter and chocolate icecream the second time (double scoops) and I like to joke that my kids came out happy because of that!third of all, a young and fit woman is gonna lose the pounds very fast is she really wants (breastfeeding really helps!). just get her the baby jogger and let her go (I could not run, but boy I was walking miles and miles with the baby every single day) A month later I was getting in my skinny jeans (yeah a little tighter, but almost the way I was before)last of all, it does help to hear our hubbies tell us we're beautiful, but not every day, then we get annoyed (especially if you go on a diet). She IS beautiful! May 25, 2010 - 7:32 am

Jen Luciano - Oh Lindsay, you truly are beautiful & being pregnant has only enhanced that. Listen to Bobby & ignore the rest of the world & all its lies to the best of your ability. May 25, 2010 - 7:44 am

Jen Luciano - Oh Lindsay, you are truly beautiful & your pregnancy has only enhanced that. Listen to Bobby & to the best of your ability ignore the lies of society. May 25, 2010 - 7:46 am

Aaron Hoops - tell her to swim instead of running....its a good workout and apparently....and i have no idea how they know this....but the sound of the water is comforting to the baby or something. May 25, 2010 - 7:55 am

Meg - Lindsay is gorgeous! I can imagine that any day of the week she's the envy of most women... You're such a good husband to remind her of that!May 25, 2010 - 1:24 am

Jessica Wright- Monnich - I remember those days, That is soooo awesome that she is keeping to the plan your DR. set up. Encourage her to keep it up! Karen Chappell-Elder - I hope she realizes she is not getting FAT she is being PREGNANT. She is an amazing lady and I was surprised to hear that even someone as beautiful, thin, and together as Lyndsey suffers from body image issues from time to time. She is absolutely stunning ... if i had a quarter of her beauty i would feel blessed. : )May 25, 2010 - 10:00 am

Jessica Wright- Monnich - AMEN your wifey is TOTALLY GORGEOUS! :)May 25, 2010 - 11:06 am

jamie delaine - Oh Lindsay. It's always so amazing to me that every woman truly does deal with body issues. I'm not sure why, but somehow we always assume we are alone in this. I've always thought you to be the most stunning, amazing woman. Seriously! One of the most beautiful people I know--without a doubt.May 25, 2010 - 9:17 am

Tim Sarquis - Dude...it's like we're living the same life! You're saying all the right things and it helps, trust me. I say the exact same thing to my beautiful pregnant wife (and I mean it!) and it really helps her. True, there are going to be times where no matter what you say its not going to help. But just being there to listen to her and to sympathize with her, will make all the difference!May 25, 2010 - 11:23 am

Andi - Awww, I'm crying your ode to your wife is sooo beautiful, just like she no matter what her weight is!May 25, 2010 - 11:39 am

Afro Warrior - ONE OF THE SWEETEST BLOGS I'VE EVER READ! BEYOND ADORABLE...May 25, 2010 - 12:40 pm

Elisha - From the first time I found your blog, I have thought Lindsay is one of the most gorgeous women in the world. If I was that beautiful, I'd *want* to expand! Hug that insanely lovely girl for me!May 25, 2010 - 3:40 pm

ajira - Oh Lindsay, you're gorgeous! And I hear you. It's bewildering to see your body change so rapidly and be taken over by this little being. I think it's training for when the little one arrives out here in the atmosphere. Because they do take over your heart, your mind, your life, your house... LOL. Thank goodness they're so adorable and buddha like- just bursting with love, compassion and serenity. Mostly. On the serenity part I mean. Anyway, just wanted to say- trust yourself, trust your body (look at what you're creating!) and trust your baby. Secondly, breastfeeding and running after that baby once he's out here will get you fit again. No doubt. And if you give birth naturally, you'll be up and at 'em in no time. Everything about pregnancy and birth is so streamlined to support the next aspect of it, it's breathtaking. There are SO many resources out there to learn from. If you want some recs, holla!May 28, 2010 - 1:17 am

Why I love China: Esther

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

My first trip to China was about ten years ago. It was with a non-profit org and we worked at an orphanage for a couple months (Lindsay and I had just started dating about a month before the trip — had our first kiss [and Lindsay's first kiss ever] the night we flew out to China, in fact. It was Lindsay’s second trip out there as she spent a couple months at the same orphanage just six months prior). My life after that trip would never be the same. I’d estimate that I grew years and years in maturity when it comes to perspective on life (outside matters of perspective, I’m sure I was as immature as it got :P). I was so heavily impacted by living amongst people that had it far worse than even the homeless I grew up skating around in San Diego (spending time with homeless people goes hand in hand with skateboarding). I learned an incredible amount from people who had so much less than people we would consider poor and how they still remained pleasant, happy people.

Amongst all the great things I learned in China — and all the things I love about China — there was one shining gem. Her name was Esther. When people ask me what it is about China that I love so much, Esther is the first answer that pops in my mind. At the time, she was about 10 years old and I was 18/19 (had my birthday over there). For some reason, we just bonded — constantly at each others’ hip. Esther spoke zero English so I spent my time learning more of the language each day. We got to where we could talk about little things here and there. But a huge place we bonded over was through music — over the piano that someone had donated to the orphanage.

At the time, Esther’s favorite song that I would play was Pachelbel’s Canon. She was still quite young, so I taught her the right hand part of the song.

Saying goodbye was genuinely gut-wrenching. So many worries go through your head. So many concerns. Orphanages in China (at the time, at least) stopped caring for orphans at twelve — not eighteen like the States. Obviously, a twelve year old orphan on her own in China can have a very hard time surviving. I knew she was at an awesome, loving orphanage — but still, the fear was there.

About four years later, I returned to China with my best friend, Garrett. We went to the orphanage and Esther walked right past me! I had no clue if I’d see her so I was thrilled. She showed me pictures of her old “friends” (people who had visited) and showed me pictures of one of her “favorite” friends — an ugly guy with big, black, bushy hair. On this visit I had a buzzed head. However, four years prior I had a bushy head of dyed black hair — so I pointed out that that was me. She immediately went to the piano with me :) She started playing some songs I had taught her… it was really a bit too much for me to keep in. I can say with 100% sincerity that outside the day that I married Lindsay, this was the best day of my life. All of my fears about Esther were put to rest. She was safe. Happy. Going to school. Working at the orphanage. It was such an incredible trip for me.

I went back again but was unable to see Esther. I was thrilled as the reason that I couldn’t see her was because she was in university :) This last time, however, Esther was there — a total surprise as I didn’t think she would be. She’s nearly 20 now, in university, studying music, and Lindsay and I both couldn’t get over how beautiful she’s become. She plays the same way I learned how to play my instruments — just by ear. She’s got such a talent for it. Certain people have fingers that sort of glide effortlessly over the keys as they play — and she’s one of those people. I could watch her play for hours, to be honest.

Watching Esther’s journey over the last ten years has been a true highlight of my life. I think about her so often. The nice thing now is that I don’t worry about her anymore.

——————–

I’d like to add for parents out there that my mom and dad decided to push me and my sister to do a year of service/travel. From a young age, we were always told that we would do this after high school — before college. In a culture where education is considered the number one priority, I found that helping others outside of your culture is, amongst many other things, far more educational. I’d argue that it caused (in me, at least) significantly more growth and maturation than four years in college would have. I speak of it often, but a proper perspective on life can make a pauper enjoy life like a king while an improper perspective on life can make a king despise life as if he were a pauper. I happened to go on and never attend college — and that isn’t necessarily the best idea for everyone. College is a great thing, but consider suggesting college after taking a year off and helping out in the world to your child. College will always be there next year. I can tell you with absolute certainty that it changed my life.

Matthew Taft - What a great post, Bobby, truly inspiring. My year of service became 3 1/2 years. It was so rad when you and Lindsay came and visited me and Lindsey during that time. I had done some college before living in Germany, and I've done more college since. The interesting thing, to me, is recognizing how differently I go about college now than I did then. I sat in Starbucks a few weeks back listening to a group of young college kids joke about their terrible classes. The "cool" kids were the ones who didn't care about their classes, and just got good enough grades to not cancel out their scholarships or whatever. It just became clear they had no clue about the world. They had skipped from high school parties into college parties and the real world hadn't made its stamp on them yet. I think it's something to consider, how so often kids are sent off to college before they have a real and independent idea about what matters "out there." A common result is a wasted education, kids with degrees in "business" having no clue what they want to do with their life. Their education might have taken a different direction if they had ambition first. This, of course, isn't true of every case, but I sure see it a lot. It's a good thing your parents did. Because couch.May 24, 2010 - 5:17 am

Beijing engagement photos: Shelby and Stephen

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

Shelby and Stephen. I love these two! I’d be shooting their wedding in Beijing in a HEARTBEAT!!! But unfortunately I don’t get back from South Africa in time :(

Shelby and Stephen were wanting elements of every day Beijing life infused in their images. Since I’ve been going to China on a regular basis over the last ten years, I was so into this idea! Anyways, here are the images :)

Cherry blossoms are an iconic piece of imagery in China. I love being in Beijing when they are in bloom.

Beijing traffic (not nearly all that bad when we were taking the photo).

silk market, beijing china
One of the funnest places alive — the Silk Market in Beijing. This place is 6 stories and just insane for shopping (and bartering). Shelby has made many friends here — and this is taken in front of her friend’s shop (just before she invited her to the wedding :).

This is one of my favorite places to eat in the world — it’s this Korean restaurant in Beijing. Shelby took me to this place years ago — and now it’s a favorite of theirs :)

Shelby and Stephen were big on the idea of having regular Chinese people involved in their images. I love the entire series of the above images for all the people that are in them :)
