RPTE: China Teaser video!!!

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

So forgive for rushing this. It takes me SOOOO much time to go through all the video I shoot on these trips. I just didn’t have the time to go through everything from the last RPTE to China earlier this year (nearly a terabyte of video!). Yesterday I just grabbed a few clips — so I know I’m missing some awesome parts — but something is better than nothing!

Check it out below or watch it in HD here (HD is MUCH better for this stuff so click the link instead of the embedded video ;).

It might be too late for an RPTE to China this spring — but if enough people can go on such short notice, you know I’m always game to go back to Beijing. The best city on earth :)

Bobby

p.s. I sent out an email blast to everyone signed up on the RPTE mailing list yesterday. If you didn’t get it, and you want to, email me at info@bobbyearle.com (subject: RPTE) and I’ll forward it to you ;)

Why I love China: Esther

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

My first trip to China was about ten years ago. It was with a non-profit org and we worked at an orphanage for a couple months (Lindsay and I had just started dating about a month before the trip — had our first kiss [and Lindsay's first kiss ever] the night we flew out to China, in fact. It was Lindsay’s second trip out there as she spent a couple months at the same orphanage just six months prior). My life after that trip would never be the same. I’d estimate that I grew years and years in maturity when it comes to perspective on life (outside matters of perspective, I’m sure I was as immature as it got :P). I was so heavily impacted by living amongst people that had it far worse than even the homeless I grew up skating around in San Diego (spending time with homeless people goes hand in hand with skateboarding). I learned an incredible amount from people who had so much less than people we would consider poor and how they still remained pleasant, happy people.

Amongst all the great things I learned in China — and all the things I love about China — there was one shining gem. Her name was Esther. When people ask me what it is about China that I love so much, Esther is the first answer that pops in my mind. At the time, she was about 10 years old and I was 18/19 (had my birthday over there). For some reason, we just bonded — constantly at each others’ hip. Esther spoke zero English so I spent my time learning more of the language each day. We got to where we could talk about little things here and there. But a huge place we bonded over was through music — over the piano that someone had donated to the orphanage.

At the time, Esther’s favorite song that I would play was Pachelbel’s Canon. She was still quite young, so I taught her the right hand part of the song.

Saying goodbye was genuinely gut-wrenching. So many worries go through your head. So many concerns. Orphanages in China (at the time, at least) stopped caring for orphans at twelve — not eighteen like the States. Obviously, a twelve year old orphan on her own in China can have a very hard time surviving. I knew she was at an awesome, loving orphanage — but still, the fear was there.

About four years later, I returned to China with my best friend, Garrett. We went to the orphanage and Esther walked right past me! I had no clue if I’d see her so I was thrilled. She showed me pictures of her old “friends” (people who had visited) and showed me pictures of one of her “favorite” friends — an ugly guy with big, black, bushy hair. On this visit I had a buzzed head. However, four years prior I had a bushy head of dyed black hair — so I pointed out that that was me. She immediately went to the piano with me :) She started playing some songs I had taught her… it was really a bit too much for me to keep in. I can say with 100% sincerity that outside the day that I married Lindsay, this was the best day of my life. All of my fears about Esther were put to rest. She was safe. Happy. Going to school. Working at the orphanage. It was such an incredible trip for me.

I went back again but was unable to see Esther. I was thrilled as the reason that I couldn’t see her was because she was in university :) This last time, however, Esther was there — a total surprise as I didn’t think she would be. She’s nearly 20 now, in university, studying music, and Lindsay and I both couldn’t get over how beautiful she’s become. She plays the same way I learned how to play my instruments — just by ear. She’s got such a talent for it. Certain people have fingers that sort of glide effortlessly over the keys as they play — and she’s one of those people. I could watch her play for hours, to be honest.

Watching Esther’s journey over the last ten years has been a true highlight of my life. I think about her so often. The nice thing now is that I don’t worry about her anymore.

——————–

I’d like to add for parents out there that my mom and dad decided to push me and my sister to do a year of service/travel. From a young age, we were always told that we would do this after high school — before college. In a culture where education is considered the number one priority, I found that helping others outside of your culture is, amongst many other things, far more educational. I’d argue that it caused (in me, at least) significantly more growth and maturation than four years in college would have. I speak of it often, but a proper perspective on life can make a pauper enjoy life like a king while an improper perspective on life can make a king despise life as if he were a pauper. I happened to go on and never attend college — and that isn’t necessarily the best idea for everyone. College is a great thing, but consider suggesting college after taking a year off and helping out in the world to your child. College will always be there next year. I can tell you with absolute certainty that it changed my life.

Matthew Taft - What a great post, Bobby, truly inspiring. My year of service became 3 1/2 years. It was so rad when you and Lindsay came and visited me and Lindsey during that time. I had done some college before living in Germany, and I've done more college since. The interesting thing, to me, is recognizing how differently I go about college now than I did then. I sat in Starbucks a few weeks back listening to a group of young college kids joke about their terrible classes. The "cool" kids were the ones who didn't care about their classes, and just got good enough grades to not cancel out their scholarships or whatever. It just became clear they had no clue about the world. They had skipped from high school parties into college parties and the real world hadn't made its stamp on them yet. I think it's something to consider, how so often kids are sent off to college before they have a real and independent idea about what matters "out there." A common result is a wasted education, kids with degrees in "business" having no clue what they want to do with their life. Their education might have taken a different direction if they had ambition first. This, of course, isn't true of every case, but I sure see it a lot. It's a good thing your parents did. Because couch.May 24, 2010 - 5:17 am

For Photographers: Be prepared

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

On our travels back home from RPTE 2010: China a couple weeks ago, my Shootsac got stolen. That was bad enough as my Shootsac is by far my favorite accessory (it’s geared toward wedding photographers, but I find it invaluable — no joke — for travel photography) — but along with some other accessories, my 50L and both my tilt shift lenses were stolen. One of the “accessories” that was in my Shootsac was EVERY memory card I had with me and two mini-hard drives that I had uploaded everything onto! We’re talking about several hundred gigabytes worth of work — all potentially gone.

——————–

Now about being prepared.

——————–

Often times, when traveling home from an international trip, you are tempted to not upload your cards from the last day of shooting. You probably got in late, need to get up early, have to pack, etc. and the idea of uploading your cards now doesn’t sound all that great. After all, you can upload them when you get home, right? Well sometimes you can’t. I make it a point to always upload the moment I am able. And not just once. I have three drives with me. That’s right. Three. The idea is to have one on me. One in another of my bags. And the other on Lindsay. Well this time two of them were in the shootsac, but the other one? It was with me. And the memory cards in the shootsac? I uploaded all of them the night before just to be safe. And my gear will be covered by insurance, so while I’m not happy about losing my gear, I’m happy I have insurance :)

There’s the old Chinese proverb that asks when the best time to plant a tree is. The first answer is 20 years ago. The next answer is today. If you’re a photographer and you don’t have insurance? Change that. And if you’re a photographer and you don’t have your work backed up? Do that now. Like right now. Drives are soooo cheap these days. I just bought three more of these Western Digital 2tb drives (that’s 2000gb’s for less than $150!). And when I travel I use these 1tb Passport drives (they don’t need any extra plugins — just straight into my laptop). You might not need three like me but you can never be too safe :P

——————–

So because of having insurance (awesome coverage through PPA, for those wondering), I saved myself about $5000 worth of trouble. And because of my back up system, I have several hundred gigabytes of priceless photography work that I wouldn’t have given up for anything. So if you need a good reason to get on the ball, this post should help you out :)

Colby Brown - *tablet...can't type todayMay 20, 2010 - 12:00 am

Colby Brown - I hear ya, that makes sense. I however always have a Hyperdrive Album back up device with me that allows me to piggy back other spare HD's to create multiple back ups from a single device that is small, lightweight and a LONG battery capacity. But yes, in the end it is one heavy thing or a few light things. To each their own.He is a link to the back up device - http://www.hypershop.com/HyperDrive-Memory-Card-Backup-Device-s/119.htmMay 20, 2010 - 12:00 am

Colby Brown - haha...ya...they are amazing little devices. Have taken mine all over the place. Very nice when you do work in countries that don't have stable power, like the majority of my photography. Electricity is a luxury we enjoy here in the us...course so is clean drinking water. Speaking of which I sent you a message yesterday about a project of mine in Haiti. Not sure if you have had a chance to read it yet...May 20, 2010 - 12:00 am

Richelle Dante - Your notes don't have photos either. I think there is something wrong with FB notes right now. :/May 20, 2010 - 1:35 am

Steph Irons - +100 for backups and -100 for thieves!May 20, 2010 - 1:59 am

Josh Ridder - Where can you get insurance for photo gear?May 20, 2010 - 5:35 am

Colby Brown - You can get insurance from a lot of places. Just depends on the level you are at. I am am a full time photog that travels around the world, mostly to developing countries. The total value of my gear is well above 15,000 so I have to get different insurance then what a hobbits might need. If you don't have a ton of gear, then typically state farm is the most popular and pretty cheap.Bobby, that has happened to me a few times. Nepal, Ecuador...you name it. For the work that I do though, traveling as light as possible is huge. For that reason you will rarely see me with a laptop. Instead I use a hyperdrive Album back up device. You can buy them with HDs or with just the case like I did, then install your own HD. You can also easily attach any spare HDs you may have with you to back up straight off the device. It is small, lightweight and very efficient. Just some thing to think about.Colby Brownwww.colbybrownphotography.comMay 20, 2010 - 6:17 am

Colby Brown - Haha...hobbiest...not hobbits ;) pricelessMay 20, 2010 - 6:18 am

Daniel Hendley - On the blog he mentions having insurance here: http://www.ppa.com/Definitely a good lesson for us all, I'm bad about not downloading my cards when I'm away from home for a few days.May 20, 2010 - 6:20 am

JonnyUps - So what insurance would you suggest? I've "been meaning to get insurance" for a long time now. I work for myself, and nobody will cover me if something happens. It's up to me, and I'd like to plant that tree now if possible. :)May 20, 2010 - 1:10 am

Bobby Earle - I updated the post -- I should have included that! But it's PPA that I get my insurance through :)May 20, 2010 - 1:22 am

Corneli - what happend bobby, how did it get stolen? did you leave it somewhere? great post.May 20, 2010 - 1:47 am

Rhiona Ward - I think I ought to look into this hobbit insurance you speak of. :)May 20, 2010 - 9:51 am

Colby Brown - haha....got to love typing on a smart phone ;)May 20, 2010 - 11:12 am

Bobby Earle - I usually TRY to travel as light as possible -- but then I end up HAVING to bring extra things. Now that I do so much video work on my travels, that has me bringing things I never brought before! Like my 70-200 (I HATE lugging that thing around!), steadicam, clamps, etc. And I got in the habit of bringing my laptop early -- everywhere. Many western countries. Many developing countries. I've filled my passport up twice now and the laptop has gone with me everytime. I've found that I can almost always find internet -- even in the jungles of Cambodia or the African bush -- at some point of my trip. And I use that time to blog. Without the laptop, I can't blog -- at all. Even if it's like my trip next week to Africa where I'll only have internet 2 of the 11 days, I'll still be bringing my laptop for those two days. And this trip last week to China -- it was difficult to blog everyday (instead of sleep at the end of everyday like I wanted), but I force myself to because I know I'll be happier in the long run that I did. I'm kind of obsessed with blogging :)May 20, 2010 - 11:37 am

Cindy Lowe - 3 hard drives! way to go Bobby! I'm so glad that you didn't lose a single image from the trip! :)May 20, 2010 - 12:08 pm

Megan Wilson Eckers - great tips, bobby...and PRAISE the Lord you didn't lose your images.May 20, 2010 - 12:56 pm

Joanna - This is really awful, what happened to you- I'm sorry. At the same time-thank you for sharing. Thank you for advising. There is so much out of our control, that having a good plan, good habit is the only thing we have sometimes, right? Appreciate the tip about insurance.May 20, 2010 - 6:27 am

Ty - Wow. That is great advice. I double back up everything, but all backups are in one spot. I like your advice about storing items in separate places.May 20, 2010 - 7:00 am

Michael Nease - Incredible! I absolutely love the great wall... Probably one oft favorites of your pics!May 20, 2010 - 7:39 am

Colby Brown - blogging is great, but adding that much weight to a trip, in my opinion is never a good thing. I do some video on my trips by typically it is just still work. However I won't bring a laptop with me unless it I HAVE to get work PP and turned out very quick. For blogging on the road, I know we have talked about it before, I use my ipad. Now having said that, I am really looking forward to any of the Google Android tablets coming out as the ipad has a lot of weaknesses. Either way, it is light, battery last for 10 hours and I can easily charge it with the same solar charger I take with me when off the grid and it does basic things like blogging incredibly well. Now if only I could upload a few images to it and edit them to churn out work, I would be set. At less then half the weight of my lightest laptop...I will take a table any day of the week over my macbook pro 13'.May 20, 2010 - 2:59 pm

Colby Brown - *tablet...can't type todayMay 20, 2010 - 3:00 pm

Bobby Earle - Gotcha ;) But a 13" MBP pro and an iPad has 3lbs of difference and the MBP slips into my camera bag in a back compartment -- taking up no space. So I'd rather bring the laptop and leave a lens at home, if anything ;) And if I could blog like I do (PPing and all) and triple backup like I do (on three separate drives -- and remember, I brought home about 500gb's this last week from China -- that's 1.5tb's altogether once backed up) on a tablet or anything else, that might change my mind. However, a 13"MBP, for me, is easier to travel with than an iPad (at this point) for reasons of blogging and backing up. And the 3lbs difference is negligible for me :)May 20, 2010 - 3:14 pm

Colby Brown - I hear ya, that makes sense. Coolest Beijing store ever…

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

So when we were out in China last week we went to the Dirt market (properly known as Panjiayuan Market). Such a fun place filled with tons and tons of antiques and cool things to buy. However, my favorite spot (by far) was the Tintoys shop where Changqing Jin sells either vintage-like tin toys or actually legit antique tin toys. There were so many awesome toys there! Changqing Jin is such a nice man that really is quite passionate about preserving the history of these tin toys. It was so neat to hear him tell us the stories behind some of the toys.

So I ended up with these four…Apparently, the blue alien is super old. I figured they’d fit great on the new piano :D

If you’re going to the Dirt market in Beijing, be sure to check him out and say hello! His shop is No.26, Row 1, area 3. If you want to get in contact with him, his email is panjiayuan3126@163.com. And if you’re wondering how to get to the Dirt market (only open Saturday and Sunday), this should help…

Shelby and Stephen. I love these two! I’d be shooting their wedding in Beijing in a HEARTBEAT!!! But unfortunately I don’t get back from South Africa in time :(

Shelby and Stephen were wanting elements of every day Beijing life infused in their images. Since I’ve been going to China on a regular basis over the last ten years, I was so into this idea! Anyways, here are the images :)
