Leif and Erica’s first baby!!!

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

Our friends, Leif and Erica, had their first baby!!! I ran over to the hospital this morning to see the gorgeous (few hours old) little girl, Harper Grace Brandt :)

I wish Clive had that much hair! And apparently Erica had no heartburn (moms will know what I’m talking about ;)…

Nashville family portraits: The Sulcer’s

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

I’ve had so much fun shooting portrait sessions out here in Nashville. Blogs make the world smaller and the Sulcer’s are proof of that. My mother-in-law works with Kari (mom in the photos) and told Jimmy (dad in the photos) about me a while back (since he’s a photographer, as well). Well he’s been reading the blog since then, invited us over for dinner a couple weeks ago, and grabbed the last Nashville session I was going to be shooting. Stories like these are one of the main reasons I love blogging :)

Anyways, as you’ll see from the photos, we got to know their daughters REAL well when we had dinner with the whole family a week before the portrait session. So the shoot was basically Ava and Dylan hour — which I instantly found out meant racing, wrestling, them shooting photos with my camera, more racing, more wrestling, and then negotiating terms with me so we could race, wrestle, and shoot with my camera some more. If you’re not a photographer, this might sound hectic. But if you are a photographer, you’ll know that this means awesome photos. The two oldest girls were just hamming it up over and over for me — photographers can’t ask for more :)

Funny story here. I was shooting and said “ahhh… come on car…” waiting for a car to move behind my subject’s head. Well, my subject’s name is “Kari” (pronounced “Car-ee” and not “care-ee”) :P Needless to say, her response was, “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do???” and my immediate thought was “what’s she talking about, she’s doing great!” Then it hit me that saying “ahhh… come on car…” sounds an awful lot like grumbling “ahhh… come on Kari…” We had a good laugh over it :)

On your mark. Get set. Go!

Hands down, my favorite image from the day. Her expression is priceless. If someone offered me a million bucks, I doubt I could duplicate this face :)

Here’s me being attacked by a miniature mob.

And here’s how Jimmy helps me :P

This is the no smile until I say ‘bananas!’ game :)

Second favorite image from the day. It’s just so sweet.

I might start shooting more portraits at home. I’ve been having a lot of fun doing them out here :)

So our friends, James and Deb, just had their baby!!! They were due a few months before us — and we’ve been dying to see what baby Jack will look like — so it was so fun finally getting to see the little bugger :)

Here’s James, the brand new papa, perfecting the art of swaddling :)

Here’s an insanely drugged (and totally hysterical) post C-section Deb. Jack opened his eyes to look at his mom :)

This was the only image I wanted to be in color — seemed to fit.

Welcome to the world, Jack :)

RPTE China: Day 7

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

I’m extremely fortunate to have been able to see this orphanage over the course of ten years now. It hit both Lindsay and myself on this trip that it really has been ten years since we first went to the orphanage here in Beijing. I can wholeheartedly say that it has changed my life.

I was so pleased that they allow not only allow myself to visit whenever we come back to Beijing, but they allow me to bring visitors. My hope was to show the RPTE attendants how innocent these children are, how beautiful adoption is, how incredible people can be when they choose to help others, and, most importantly, that getting dealt a bad hand does not mean that you should sulk through life. These kids were handed a very interesting set of problems yet they still find ways to smile and have fun with the best of them. It’s truly inspiring.

We were able to bring fun things like toys and ice cream — and then necessities like shampoo, milk, and money. The fun these kids had just with the bubbles we brought alone was worth the trip :)

Life can so easily be full of complaints — yet it rarely seems to be by those who have the most right to complain ;)

Caroline Ghetes - Okay, so I have been wanting to adopt ever since I was about 7 or 8 years old, and that first boy has such a beautiful smile! And I agree. Many of us here in America could use a humbling experience like visiting an orphanage to make us realize that some of our problems are nothing in comparison to what children in orphanages have dealt with.May 4, 2010 - 5:55 am

Before and After Wednesday #36

Follow me on Twitter / Be my friend on Facebook

This week’s before and after Wednesday is from the recent rainy days with my nephew, Izzy. This will again be one of the most simple before and after posts I’ve ever done :)

As usual, I’m using my handy dandy totally rad actions (or presets, this time). I freaking love these things. If you’re too lazy to make your own actions and/or presets (like me) OR you tried to make them and they didn’t turn out the way you wanted to and you’re too lazy to try harder (like me), then these actions and presets will be a big Whitney Houston style “hell to the yeah!

Let’s do this. The first image is the final, processed image. The second one is the unprocessed original.

Canon 5D Mark II + 24mm f/1.4L at ISO320, 1/400th, and f/1.4.

Bodie Lite (Lightroom preset) — no changes
Grainstorm (Photoshop action) — at 40%

And that’s it!

So if you’re looking for something to spruce up your photos, go for it and grab some Get Totally Rad Actions! I paid for both sets out of my pocket and LOVE them. But do it through my link above or the banner below (shameless plug) as the money is going to go to a rad cause ;)

Hope this helps some of you out! Oh yeah, and if anyone has any ideas on how I could change up B&A Wed’s, I’m all ears!

Vicky - Nice conversion Bobby! Although I have to admit, I love the splash of colour in the original too. I was wondering if you'd be up for B&Aing someone else's photo every now and again on B&A Wednesday. I know normally you probably take a picture with a set PP in mind, but I wonder if it might be an interesting exercise for you to have a go with a photo submitted here on the blog. You could ask for submissions and then maybe choose one that takes your fancy? Failing that, I am looking forward to Earle Bump Jr being B&A'd :)March 3, 2010 - 2:26 pm

Josh Ridder - Just got these myself and I'm loving them, they work great in the LR3 beta as well.March 3, 2010 - 2:36 pm

Nick Radford - The problem is the lr3 beta crashes more than an intoxicated asian.March 3, 2010 - 2:36 pm

Bobby Earle - Whoa! Nick comes out swinging!!! :PMarch 3, 2010 - 2:37 pm

James Mavis - lolMarch 3, 2010 - 2:59 pm

Nick Radford - Maybe that wasn't the most racially friendly example, BUT geesh I know why the beta was free... The ONLY reason I keep using it is the add grain slider speeds up my workflow exponentially. No more export to Photoshop run grainstorm and save again! With the new totally rad presets and lr3 (when it's released) I can see myself phasing out PS quite a bit.March 3, 2010 - 2:59 pm
