Before and After Wednesdays #10

Woohoo! I didn’t think I’d get one up this week, but it worked out :) This B&A Wed is from Noel and Heather’s engagements from Sunday (comeback tomorrow for their full post) – and I’m trying something different. I’m embedding an entire website to see what you guys think! So I need you to let me know if you like this way, OR if you prefer the normal way.

*UPDATE* I posted at like 2am and I don’t know where my head was! This page is embedded below with Showit Sites. Seriously, probably the coolest thing I use. The Showit team never ceases to amaze me with what they can do :)

As usual, I LOVE TRA’s – they’re the actions used below – and TOTALLY recommend them :D

Flash Required to view this area.

As always, if you guys like the idea of these posts, or are getting something out of B&A Wed’s, go ahead and share the love with friends :D

Now, as before, whenever comments get in the 20′s, there’s a chance I’ll post another B&A Wed the following wednesday. If they pass the 30′s, it’s a definite!

Bobby

p.s. so do you prefer the embedded site above or the normal way???

daniel - Bobby, you and Lindsay want to get dinner with us tomorrow? We're meeting up with marissa.March 31, 2009 - 11:54 pm

Bobby Earle - Ah! I totally forgot to text you back (I was shooting an engagement when you texted)! You bet we do! We found a RIPPINGLY good sushi place in Esco - crunchy shrimp and crab rolls for half of loveboats - and basically as good!April 1, 2009 - 12:06 am

Simon - Great work on the picture ..... and love the new method of presenting it ... presumably some fancy imbed from a showit page?April 1, 2009 - 12:27 am

Anonymous - I really like the new way. It's easy and it loads way faster. Great job on trying to improve your site.

Question by the way... how do you transfer the image from Lightroom to Photoshop? It maybe a noob question but... that's what I am.April 1, 2009 - 1:00 am

Katie Slater Photography - LOVE it!!! :)April 1, 2009 - 4:22 am

Carriebearwcu - When I'm on your actual blog, I like the new way; however, I keep up with your blog through Google Reader and it doesn't show up there. When I copied and pasted your url, it came up with your actual web site, and THEN I had to find your blog -- it was a little bit of a hassle. So, if my vote counts, I like the old way.April 1, 2009 - 4:28 am

Mamacita Chilena - Nice, that's a cool take on B/W. I never use derelicte so now I'll have to try that one out.

I also use Google Reader to read your blog so the embedded images didn't show up there. So I'm with Carrie. :)April 1, 2009 - 4:53 am

dani marie - I have your site saved as a favorite, Carrie that is what I would suggest, then I just click on it when I want to see what Bobby and Lindsay are up to ;)

Bobby-- LOVE the new way!! And please don't stop these, they are a lot of help!April 1, 2009 - 5:06 am

Matt Dorroh - very cool image man and great use of the new showit embed feature!April 1, 2009 - 5:07 am

Anonymous - I like the embedded way. Its saves space and is easier to follow in my opinion. Great work Bobby!April 1, 2009 - 5:37 am

|| davidjay || - Dude that's freaking coolApril 1, 2009 - 5:42 am

Amanda - I like the new way. takes a bit longer to load, but very cool.April 1, 2009 - 5:51 am

Anonymous - these are so helpful i just got the totally rad actions because of your blog please don't stop these! I like the old way so u can scroll up and down to compare everything.April 1, 2009 - 5:59 am

Nelson - I love these b/a wednesdays, and I really dig the new embedded site version.April 1, 2009 - 6:18 am

Carol Hebel Photography - the new way is really cool. thanks for posting!April 1, 2009 - 7:24 am

Svetlana - love this day a week! :):) please keep the b/a wednesdays coming.:)
i don't have problems downloading your new blog, so that's my vote.April 1, 2009 - 7:26 am

tim - much prefer the old way. cool post nonetheless!April 1, 2009 - 7:56 am

alex.kruk photography - I like the new way a lot ! Very good way to show what you applied on your picture. Can't wait to see the rest of their pictures.

AlexApril 1, 2009 - 8:18 am

David - Keep bringin' it, Bobby. I like the old way better because I can switch between the before and after faster, but this new way is great day. Can't complain.

Good job.April 1, 2009 - 9:22 am

Annemarie - I prefer the old way because you can see them in comparison to each other, and see each step in comparison to the previous....but nice job. You're really using the new feature to it's full capacity!!!April 1, 2009 - 10:25 am

Studio222 Photography - That's fun.April 1, 2009 - 11:46 am

Anonymous - The old way was better. Switching between steps has a delay for me.April 1, 2009 - 1:33 pm

Ash - Fort Wayne area Wedding Photographer - Love love the embedded version. Very clean very professional. Does it take longer or speed up the process?

ThanksApril 1, 2009 - 3:49 pm

Ash - Fort Wayne area Wedding Photographer - Also btw I sent you an email just now. Wanted to let you know just in case yourjunk filter tries to snag it... Thanks if you get the free time to respond to it.

i can't believe the quality of that lens and that 5DII! Mine wont go higher then 1600 and thats not a pretty picture then... :) The way she has her leg really makes it look romantic like you caught them in the moment. Great stuff!April 1, 2009 - 4:01 pm

Edwin - I love the embedded way but was wondering if you can include screen shots of the Lightroom settings as well just like you did with PS.

Thanks again for doing this! I look forward to these type of post.April 1, 2009 - 4:17 pm

Mike Carpenter - Cool site man. I just found it and I'll check back frequently!April 1, 2009 - 4:40 pm

Linda - Definitely like the new way. very cool. ISO 3200? wow, I would think it would have more grain than that. so no flash. very interesting. I am going to try that. Dont do alot of night shooting so will be fun to experiment. and YES, very good you snatched her at 18 or she would have gotten snatched and besides how were you to know that she would turn out to be such a good photographer. A husband and wife team is perfect cause then you get both perspectives. Definitely need a woman's touch.April 2, 2009 - 12:08 pm

Susana Cristina - Thanx for this weeks before and after. Always looking forward to these. Love the new presentation style. Clean, compact and to the point. Thanx!April 2, 2009 - 2:17 pm

Leah Bailly - Love the B&A!

I'm a fan of the old style though, as most others have said, its easier to switch between them to see the difference.April 3, 2009 - 12:23 am

Scott - I love these. I'm not sure which style I like more... but I do know that as a photographer who is working on building my wedding business; I find these both helpful and inspiring. Thanks for sharing.April 3, 2009 - 9:06 am

Trey Dillon - Hey thanks for doing these I enjoi them. Question though. How do you handle all your pictures. Do you just store them all on hard drives? Do you keep originals and edits? Just wondering the process.April 5, 2009 - 8:55 pm

Russ Robinson - I kinda like the old way better....not digging the delay between each stage of the process. But I *LOVE* these B&As-- keep 'em comin'!April 7, 2009 - 3:38 am

Anonymous - love this new way! great job!April 11, 2009 - 7:41 pm

May and June are CRAZY!!!

So May and June are insane for us. You may remember me posting a little negative rant about Orbitz last week, but Cheaptickets ended up coming through for us and we’re going to Africa! We’ve never been before, so we’re super psyched!

So May and June will have us in South Africa, Swaziland, France, Australia, and Fiji. We’re hoping to add Zimbabwe and Mozambique to that list, but that’s still up in the air.

——————–

And since blogs are better with pictures… This is from our first trip to Europe together. Having never held a camera, I bought a film rebel the day before we left, slapped that bad boy on P mode (auto mode), and rifled off about 30 rolls across the continent for 2 and a half months :D This was toward the beginning of our journey – I think roll #4 – in Paris. Had no clue what anything would look like as I didn’t develop the rolls ’till we got home…

I get so nostalgic looking at this photo. We gave plasma (white blood cells) TWICE a week – EVERY WEEK – for an entire year for us to go on this trip across Europe. We didn’t have a real honeymoon, so I wanted so badly to take my new wife on the trip she deserved for our year anniversary. I secretly stashed the money aside for a whole year, booked the trip, and told Lindsay we were going on Christmas morning – two days before we left. Amongst visiting nearly every country in Europe, we spent New Years and our anniversary in London and Valentine’s day in Prague – not bad :D

At the time, there were far more responsible things to spend the money on. Not a day goes by where I’m not thankful we lived in the moment and just did it. I’ll never forget discovering an entire continent – with literally no plans made – with Lindsay at that stage of our marriage.

——————–

Oh and Garrett will be in London (where he got his masters degree in philosophy) the same time and we’ll probably have a meet up in Paris. Last time we met up in Paris we were waiting for him at the train station and saw Claudi Schiffer – so we’ll see what celeb Gare brings this time :)

Here’s a photo from the last time we were all in Paris together and then a couple random ones from other trips…

Also, all you Euro bloggers out there, I was thinking about extending our stay to maybe do a little workshoppy/photoshoot type thing with a couple in Paris – email me or comment here if you guys would want to do something like that! Ryanair and Easyjet (as you guys probably know) can get you over there for pretty cheap. May 27th?

2. You get money for donating blood?!!?! We do it for free in Canada....is that weird?March 31, 2009 - 12:16 pm

Char Baiz - wow bobby. I just wanted to say that is such an awesome story. so cool that you were able to surprise lindsey like that. I can't wait for the day that Joel and I can travel someplace together!!March 31, 2009 - 12:38 pm

Bobby Earle - Jes, we donate blood for free here in the states, too. It's specifically plasma that you can get paid for. If you did it twice a week, you'd get $50. Times that by two (because there were two of us) and that's $400 a month. Times that by a whole year, and you've got about $5k :D

There isn't one here in SoCal that I know of. This is when we lived in Texas.March 31, 2009 - 12:45 pm

Anonymous - No white blood cells in plasma :P

But seriously you guys are my traveling/photography inspiration! :)March 31, 2009 - 11:29 pm

Bobby Earle - I though plasma was the white blood cells? At least that's what they told me... We were young and dumb - Lord only knows what we were actually donating!

And what's with all these anonymous posts!!! :P Show yerselves matee :DMarch 31, 2009 - 11:34 pm

daniel - awesome trip... that sounds really nice.March 31, 2009 - 11:53 pm

Sarah - Blood plasma: makes up about 60% of total blood volume. It is composed of mostly water (90% by volume), and contains dissolved proteins, glucose, clotting factors, mineral ions, hormones and carbon dioxide.

Sorry, the nurse in me needs to explain. ha! Those United Way peeps were confused. :PApril 1, 2009 - 12:48 am

Kellie - this is totally a random question... but where are you guys planning to go when you are in Australia??April 1, 2009 - 3:24 am

The Guddats - Bobby, my dad had plasma cell cancer (multiple myeloma) so good for you for donating blood. I thought I was the only anal retentive one that noticed the WBC comment but apparently not =-) I hope you two have an absolute blast on your trip and I hope me and the hubby can take a trip like that someday!April 1, 2009 - 11:03 am

I can has cheezburger?

We had an AWESOME night last night with Katie Yates! Katie’s a young photographer out here in SD – tons of raw talent – so give her some blog love. I got an email from Katie wondering if she could treat us to dinner and pick our brains. As many of you know, I’ll do just about anything for good food :D so we said “fo sho Ka-tay-tay!!!

It was a rad meal with her and her boyfriend, good conversation, and I love talking to people like Katie – reminds me of myself a couple years back :)

And for the record, anyone who wants to take us to dinner, we are available for brain pickings any time :D

——————–

Anybody notice the new blog header? Well it’s actually a web page embedded in the header! It’s the new webpage embed feature with the AMAZING Showit Sites – these guys keep impressing me with all the new things they’re coming up with over there!

——————–

So I want to start doing this on a regular basis. My brother-in-law turned me on to this site a year ago, or so. I’ve loved it ever since. It’s I can has cheezburger? – a site where people post funny quotes (in a terrible german/euro accent, I believe?) next to pictures of animals – typically cats. Here’s how it all started…

Apparently the owner of this cat thought the cat looked like it was asking for a cheeseburger and just went with the whole idea! Glad he/she did, because the site can have some of the funniest pictures I’ve ever seen. Here are my three favorites for this week…

This one made me straight up laugh out loud.

Anyone ever heard of this? Funny? Or is it just me and my bro-in-law??? If you didn’t at least chuckle, go back and reread the captions with a bad german accent – like Hans and Frans, just not deep muscle man voices – way funnier :)

Bobby

Katie Yates - Bobby...you NEED to get the app on your iphone called I can has cheezburger? Basically endless Lolcatz images....

or.... the lolcatz translator that changes english into that weird accent.

I'm a shameless lolcatz fan!!

Thanks again for dinner last night, you two are truly amazing friends!! Please don't ever change!!!March 27, 2009 - 9:04 am

Bobby Earle - Why does everyone think I just now heard about this? I said it's been at least a year that I've been checking this site out. I'm cool, I promise :PMarch 30, 2009 - 10:08 am

Before and After Wednesdays #9

So according to my rules, I was supposed to do a B&A Wednesday yesterday – since you guys passed the comment mark :) My little scuffle with Orbitz held me back, but here it is… on a Thursday :P

As always, TRA’s are used (and HIGHLY recommended :).

Today’s image is from the ruins of Ta Prohm in Cambodia (which we’ll be going to on the raddest photo trip ever!!!)

Here’s the SOOC (straight out of camera) image – no processing…

5D+24mm f/1.4L, ISO200, f/1.4, and 1/1600th

I then pulled the photo into LR (a MUST have for wedding photographers, in my opinion), applied one of my kazillion presets, and tweaked it to look just right :D Here’s the settings…

Here’s what it looks like after that…

Then I pull that image into PS and apply Derelicte at about 60%. Lastly, I desaturate it about minus 40. Here’s the final image…

Whatcha guys think?!?

——————–

As always, if you guys like the idea of these posts, or are getting something out of “Before and After Wednesdays”, go ahead and forward it to a few friends you think might like it :) Muchas gracias to those that do! To those that don’t… be afraid!

Now, as before, whenever comments in the 20′s, there’s a fair chance I’ll post another B&A Wed the following wednesday. If they get in the 30′s, it’s a definite!

Bobby

Robert Whetton - you could be B+A Thursday Matt ;)

oh and i can Dere-lick my own balls! :D

idea: how about you supply an image and then those who want to can enter into a friendly competition?March 26, 2009 - 9:35 am

Savannah Kenney - I like Roberts idea, see how the people would process your image and find a sweet prize to give to the best image, being the one you feel like truly emotes the feeling you were looking for during capture...March 26, 2009 - 9:51 am

Michael Nease - Pretty sweet Bobby! Love it, and love how you walk through the process. Keep it up!March 26, 2009 - 10:10 am

Mamacita Chilena - I remember seeing this picture when I first came across your blog. I LOVE it. You should definitely enter it in the TRA recipe competition!!!March 26, 2009 - 10:42 am

James - Just want to give a BIG thank you Bobby!
I love your B&A's!March 26, 2009 - 10:47 am

LeleGreen - How could you not love any of your pictures. If I were you my whole house would be wall papered in my photos.March 26, 2009 - 11:54 am

Char Baiz - i love how you put your LR settings right on here. As I am using the program more it's getting even more helpful to be able to see how others use it. thanks for sharing.

and btw...
Bobby, or anyone reading this... I am shooting a quencineata in a few weeks and the party is going to be outside, at night and limited lighting (a few lamp posts and some of those strand lights). Any suggestions/advice on how to get good shots in those condidtions would be really helpful and appriciated. just email me at char_baiz@hotmail.comMarch 26, 2009 - 12:06 pm

geo1976 - Great work as always. And I'm also glad to see that you put equally as much thought into your own personal pictures as you do to wedding pictures. Great to see that you don't waterdown your paid work.March 26, 2009 - 1:54 pm

Jason Ng - this is great! these B&A's have opened up so many creative avenues for me!

thanks!March 26, 2009 - 3:46 pm

Cindy {orange turtle} - Bobby is the bomb.March 26, 2009 - 4:07 pm

random - love the before and afters! but if you ever want to change it up, I wouldn't mind if you did a "frequently asked questions" post. Keep it comming!!!March 26, 2009 - 4:46 pm

leslie lana - haha i love that the action is called "Derelicte"! You're so hott right now :)March 26, 2009 - 5:23 pm

alex.kruk photography - I love this picture and I love black and white photography so much! It is so nice of you to share your knowledge with everybody.

The new header is awesome !! I love it.

I know I asked before, but do you use showit to design your blog?
I wish I could figure it out that myself one day!

Beautiful !

ALexMarch 26, 2009 - 5:45 pm

Julie - Here, I'll make it 20 comments so you have to do it again next week! I love the B&A posts, but alas I do not have Lightroom or Photoshop or that nice of a camera or anything quite as gorgeous to photograph. I think you ought to do a comment contest for a Photoshop disc. Hey, it doesn't hurt to just put it out there. :)March 26, 2009 - 6:53 pm

Edwin - I love your B&A posts! I also like the idea about letting your readers process one of your photos. That could be fun!March 26, 2009 - 8:24 pm
